A group of Chelsea Pensioners visited The Cavendish for a special Afternoon Tea at The Cavendish, London, hotel in Mayfair. The hotel is supporting the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Great War and has launched The Rosa Lewis Afternoon Tea. Throughout April the hotel will donate £1 to the Royal Chelsea Hospital for every Afternoon Tea ordered.
Rosa Lewis, a well-loved and infamous cook and hotelier of the time, was the owner of The Cavendish London throughout both World Wars. During WW1, Rosa Lewis decided to turn The Cavendish London into a 'social first aid centre' for servicemen and would help impoverished soldiers, which she did again during World War II, Rosa embarked on Robin Hood style tactics whereby the rich paid for the poor. On the 15 May 1941 the hotel was badly damaged by a German air raid. Despite the bombing Rosa insisted that the hotel should stay open.
The Chelsea Pensioners, including an MBE and British Empire Medal holders, were treated to Afternoon Tea including freshly baked scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream and a selection of finger sandwiches including smoked salmon and cream cheese, coronation chicken and cucumber.
