Billed as "the biggest pub in the world" the
Great British Beer Festival (GBBF) is a yearly festival organised by the Campaign for Real Ale. It presents a selection of cask ales and other alcoholic drinks from the UK and beyond. The festival also features the Champion Beer Of Britain awards. GBBF's sister festival, the National Winter Ales Festival focusses on beer styles such as porter and stout, and is held in January of each year.
At the 2010 Festival there will be twelve
CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) bars. These bars contain beer from alphabetically sorted Good Beer Guide regions (starting with Aberdeen & Grampian in the first and ending with Worcestershire in the last), and are the best places to start if you want to find an ale from your part of the country.
The festival is normally held during the first week in August and runs usually from Tuesday to Saturday. It's currently held in
Earls Court Exhibition Centre. There's quite a lot to do in the event besides drinking: you can play on some traditional pub games, enjoy live music, sample some food, including good traditional pub snacks, and also attend tutored beer tastings. One interesting event is the Hat Day (Thursday 5th August), in which exhibitors and visitors are encouraged to bring along a hat they have either made themselves or are fond of. You can see some of the very unusual creations
here.
