From the massive, multi-million enterprises to the more obscure, unusual and sometimes not completely health and safety proof affairs, when it comes to music festivals, London is hard (if not impossible) to beat. There's something for everyone this year, from massively known numbers, like Bon Jovi and Rod Stewart at Hard Rock Calling (formerly known as "Hyde Park Calling"), to cult bands of days gone by, like Bananarama or The Village People, at the 80's Rewind Festival. Pack your sunscreen (hopefully you'll need it!) and some sandwiches and enjoy the music!
In chronological order, our selection of festivals is the following:
Wednesday 22nd to 26th June - Glastonbury Festival in (yes, you guessed!) Glastonbury.
We are not going to say very much about the mother of all UK festivals, because it's really quite far from London and it's sold out already!
Friday 24th to Sunday 26th June - Hard Rock Calling at Hyde Park
Would you like to see Bon Jovi, The Killers, Adam Ant and Rod Stewart all in one festival? Worry no more and join the hordes of punters coming for Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park. The Cavendish London is the ideal place to stop for the weekend, around 20 minutes from the action. Alternatively it's only a 10-minute cab ride if you are too tired from all that jumping and cheering.
Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd July - Wireless Festival at Hyde Park
Another major festival takes place in Hyde Park, very convenient, really. This major festival brings together more than 60 bands. I think the Canadians Chromeo are good enough a reason to get tickets. Any Chromeo fans around here? Does anyone even know Chromeo? Anyways, they are highly recommended, and I think you would have a lot of fun if you saw them, believe me!
Friday 15th to Sunday 17th July - Lovebox Festival at Victoria Park (pictured)
Prepare to miss the guitars in this one. Electro, electro-pop and rap are the protagonists at the Lovebox Festival. Scissor Sisters, SnoopDog, Groove Armada and Metronomy are some of the names that will be shaking the stage at Victoria Park, in Hackney. If guitars and head-banging are not your things, this is your festival!
Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st August - 80's Rewind Festival at Henley-On-Thames
This one is the perfect choice for the 30-somethings that like to reminisce about the hits of days gone by, or for the new wave of teens that seem to be unable to get enough 80's music! Some of the biggest names to be performing are The Village People, Bananarama, The Human League and Earth, Wind and Fire. I didn't even know that all these bands were still playing? It's not within walking distance to London, though, so plan your journey with a bit of time!
We hope you've enjoyed our cherry-picked selection of fine summer festivals, and let me know if you're joining any of them. I was thinking of going to Offset Festival, which looked interestingly creative and different, but it got cancelled, tough luck.
